How do I start therapy? What happens in a therapy session?
If you are new to counselling / psychotherapy, or if you would like to inquire for more details, Joy is happy to offer a free 15 minutes phone consultation.
Before the first session Joy will email you an intake form to be completed. We will meet at our scheduled time via zoom virtual conferencing (PIPEDA /HIPPA compliant). The first appointment typically consists of assessment and goal setting. Individual sessions are 50 minutes long. Couples therapy sessions are typically 60 minutes but many couples prefer longer sessions (around 80 minutes) to allow space for each voice and for collaborative reflection.

What are your fees? How are payments made? What about insurance or extended health benefits?
Individual sessions are $160 per 50-minute session, as recommended within the fee ranges of the British Colombia Association of Clinical Counsellors. Couples sessions are $190 per session or $240 for extended 80-minute sessions. Payments can be made by e-transfer to: [email protected].
Counselling or psychotherapy services are not covered by MSP, but you may be covered by extended health benefits. Please check your extended health plan carefully to make sure you have coverage for Registered Clinical Counsellors, as some plans specifically cover only psychologists or social workers. If you are covered by Pacific Blue Cross, Joy is able to do direct billing for you.

How frequently do we meet? How long will therapy take?
It is recommended (but not required) to have weekly sessions at the beginning of therapy. This helps to build momentum as well as give us a chance to build trust and get to know each other. We may space out the sessions as clients’ distress decreases by meeting every other week or monthly for check ins. On average, it takes 4-6 weeks to see changes. More complex or longer-term goals generally take longer. Many clients choose to stay in therapy long term to continue their personal growth.
